My dear Friend, The following pages contain, with additions, the substance of an Essay which I communicated to you some months since, and which was at that time submitted to the Russian government. Many of the opinions I have embraced are founded on the study of your work on Fever; to which class of diseases, and not to Cholera, I firmly believe this Indian pestilence to belong.
