    obtained, and being beset with perplexities, I found that Our doubts are traitors, And make us lose the good we oft might win By fearing to attempt. For many years I pursued my researches with- out communicating their nature to any one except to those immediately around me; but I venture to think that the time has arrived when the public should know the result of my Inquiries, now that long experience has given them sufficient weight. From 1837 to 1849, between two hundred and three hundred cases of fever occurred in the Clerkenwell Infirmary, without a single death in idiopathic cases; whereas, in 1836 alone (before my plan of treatment was adopted) twelve patients died of typhus in one month. I do not intend to enter into the pathology and prevailing treatment of the diseases enumerated in the title ; this would be a waste of professional time: but I shall attempt at once the descrip- tion of the treatment at the Clerkenwell In- firmary, and adduce the vast number of cures effected by its means.
