About this work

Description

Centre, the façade of the cathedral (marked A in the key). Left side, top, sections of the cathedral and the baptistery (B and C) together; left middle, plan of the cathedral (D); left bottom, plan of the baptistery (E). Right side, top, side elevation of the cathedral (F); right below, elevation of the façade of the baptistery (G). The detail views are represented as embroidered on trompe l'oeil tapestries around and above the main view of the cathedral façade. The tapestries also include at the top banderolles showing (left) the arms of (presumably) Maria Luisa of Spain, Grand Duchess of Tuscany, and (right) the dedication of the engraving to her. In the foreground are many visitors to the cathedral, including finely dressed ladies and gentlemen, people begging for alms, clerics, and (left) men pulling a ceremonial canopy and column
