Description

Two men, kneeling, their hats on the ground. One of them prays to a figure of the Virgin and Child, the other turns to the viewer with a gesture of despair. On the right, a second figure of the Virgin (?), with a human figure, standing, portrayed in a cartouche on the front of her garment

Per gratia receuta 1613 Inscription in the lower right corner in a cartouche with scrolled side and top pieces Further, very faint, inscriptions in pen and ink on the reverse, presumably by A. Maggiori, transcribed by Christie's as follows: "La Madonna che ... /nella chiesa .../a Recanati"; "La Madonna di Loreto"; "Paolo Jacometti Ricanatese, allievo di Pomarancio/ fece"; "appartiene a Aless. Maggiori il quale lo compro in Recanati/ nel 1812"

Creator/production credits

Jacometti worked in the Marches (Recanati, Loreto) mainly as a sculptor. Another drawing by him has been identified in Lille (B. Brejon de Lavergnée, Catalogue des dessins italiens, collections du Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Paris 19997, pp. 111-112, no. 288, a study for a terracotta relief of the adoration of the shepherds), though any resemblance in drawing style between the Lille drawing and the present work is not obvious
