Biographical note
The initials 'JR', probably those of the note-taker, follow an interpolation on f. 155r. The handwriting closely resembles that of James Roberton, a Paris-based doctor whose bequest to the Edinburgh Phrenological Society became a cause célèbre, (cf. a Roberton letter of 1836, National Library of Scotland MS. 7241, f. 40).
