    REMARKS, &c. Sir, As chief magistrate of Exeter, you will not, I feel assured, onsider intrusive any statements connected with the sanatory ondition of the city, so peculiarly under your care and super- ntendence. I shall, therefore, offer no apology for laying efore you some of the conclusions, deducihle from public locuments, in reference to this subject. Before doing so, however, it may not be inappropriate briefly o mention the nature of these documents and the character of nformation which they afford. By the sixth section of the Act* for Registering Births, eaths, and Marriages, in England, the registrar-general is equired to send once in every year to one of the principal ecretaries of State, a general abstract of the number of births, eaths, and marriages, registered during the foregoing year, in rder that the same may be laid before Parliament. In accordance with this provision, the then registrar-general, Q May, 1839, made his first report for the year ending June Oth, 1838. This report has been followed by four others, likewise by the publication of quarterly tables of mortality rranged in one hundred and fourteen (now one hundred and fteen) districts, comprehending five hundred and seventy- x registrars' districts. * Passed August 17, 1836.
