The angel points to a spring of drinking water, suggesting that the subject is Hagar rescued by an angel (Genesis 21.18-19), rather than the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, as stated in the letttering. However, the infant Ishmael is not shown, and the wilderness is represented by Claude as a lush valley in the Roman Campagna in summer
