The iconography is obscure. Jesse may be the child on the right, while the other figures are Obed (father of Jesse) and the mother of Jesse: all are ancestors of Jesus Christ

The name "Jesse" is engraved below the group. In this respect the engraving differs from Michelangelo's painting, in which the names "Iesse", "David" and "Salomon" are painted on a tablet in the lunette below the tympanum
