About this work

Description

These lithographs are derived from the dance of death frescos painted on the walls of the churchyard of the Dominican cloister in Basel. Executed between 1437 and 1441, these frescos were often altered and were finally removed in 1805 when damages could not be restored. Some of the wall fragments are preserved in the history museum in Basel

Tod zum Cardinal: Springen auf mit dem rothen Hut, Herr Cardinal, der Tanz ist gut: wohl gesegnet habt ihr die Lanen, Ihr müsst jetzund auch an den Reihen. Antwort des Cardinals. Ich war mit Päbstlicher Wahl der heiligen Kirchen Cardinal: Die Welt hielt mich in grossen Ehren, noch mag ich mich des Todes nicht erwehren. Bears number top right corner : No. 7.
