Description

The first half of the programme traces the history of anaesthetics from Humphrey Davy's experiments with nitrous oxide through the Victorian adoption of chloroform, the work of Henry Hickman, Horace Wells and others down to the present. The second half portrays an anaesthetist at work during a seven hour double heart valve replacement operation at St Thomas' Hospital.
