Description
Collection of medical and cookery recipes, for the most part in a single hand of the later 17th century.
Various authorities are named, including Dr Burgess (f. 3), Dr Bentley (f. 5), the Earl of Kildare (f. 9v.), the Baron of Kinderton (f. 12), Dr Brookes (f. 16v.), Dr Stephens (f. 26), Dr Needham (f. 29), Dr 'Willoby' (a recipe for 'the midwife pill', f. 43), Dr Knot (f. 55), Dr Griffiths (f. 65v.), and Dr Warren (f. 71).
The principal compiler has penned an epigram on the first leaf: 'Spare not nor spend too much, bee this your care Spare but to spend, and onely spend to spare [text wanting] spends too much, may want and [text wanting] complaine [text wanting] spends best, that spares to spend againe'. Cf. MS.8575.
