About this work

Description

Notebook kept by [John Lechmere], a half-pay naval officer living at Hereford from 1821 until 1825, when he acquired an estate at Steeple Aston, Oxon. The compiler has been identified from a reference to his marriage [to Anna Maria, daughter of the Hon. Andrew Foley] at Newent on 3 March 1823 (f. 7r.). The notebook contains brief diary entries, 1821-28, including a note of a visit to H[enry] H[ill] Hickman at Ludlow in 1822 (f. 3v.) and domestic and medical recipes (ff. 61-69 written from the back). On f. 65 are prescriptions for tonics, aperients and a composing draught in the hand of Matthew Baillie.
