Description

Grimaldi wears an ornate riding costume with tassels on his shorts decorated with a criss-cross shape and socks with decorative embroidery. He wears an extended cap and holds a large whip. His horse, unusually, has curly hair and is much larger than the horse in front carrying Mr Norman who wears a similarly extended riding cap but a long coat with tassels. He carries a much smaller whip

Biographical note

Grimaldi's health suffered from his pursuit as a pantomime actor through numerous accidents particularly after 1822. His pastimes included collecting flies and breeding pigeons (DNB)
