1 volume 20 ll. + 67 ll. 8vo. & folio. 15 x 10 cm., 33 x 30 cm. Unbound. Some leaves of the typescript are very badly affected by water, and almost illegible. The Hunterian Oration is very incomplete: ff. 1-43, 91-114, 140-142, 166, 171-180, 183 and two part-leaves remain.

This eminent bacteriologist and surgeon had been assistant to Lister at Edinburgh in 1877, and was an ardent supporter of his ideas. Later he was surgeon to King's College Hospital in 1891, having been elected F.R.C.S. in 1879. He was Surgeon to the Army in 1899, was given a Baronetcy in 1908 and became Surgeon-General in 1915. These papers were obtained by a Mr. Laurenson of Leagarth, Fetlar, Shetland, having been recovered by him from the beach, when he was attending the sale of Sir W. W. Cheyne's belongings on July 26th, 1933.
