Description
According to the Art journal, loc. cit., the episode was "briefly recorded by Sir Walter Scott" and "Bourrienne, Napoleon's old schoolfellow, supplies, in his Life of the Emperor, more complete particulars concerning the imprisonment". The painting had been exhibited at the British Institution in 1841 and acquired by the 1st Duke of Wellington. Napoleon sits at a table in a prison cell studying a map. On the wall behind he has scratched the words "Vive la rep[ublique]. Napoleon Bo[naparte] 1783". A prison warden opens the cell door to admit an official holding a letter in his hand
