Description

Confocal micrograph of a Quercus stem. Trees and shrubs which belong to the Quercus genus are commonly known as oaks. Plant tissue was stained with Safranin O and Fast Green and cell walls made of cellulose (orange/black/white) are visible here. Timber from oak trees is a hardwood which is used in many different ways, for example, construction, furniture, flooring, and to make barrels to store and age wine. Oak trees provide a habitat rich in biodiversity. Image created in collaboration with Jim Haseloff. Width of image is 100 micrometres.
