About this work

Description

Louis Theroux meets people whose lives have been affected by serious head injuries. Causes of the injuries include car crashes and falls although one woman's injury was caused by her taking a near-fatal overdose of insulin in a suicide attempt. The programme focusses particularly on rehabilitation either into the community or back into the family but it becomes clear that rehabilitation is fraught with issues. Many of those recovering have changed dramatically leaving them either very vulnerable to strangers as their perceptions are impaired and even in the familiar family environment it is as though they are strangers to their family who have to adapt to them being very different people often with mood swings and erratic behaviour. As Louis surmises: brain injury affects our deepest sense of who we are and leaves people caught between old and new selves.
