About this work
Description
This programme looks at the breakthroughs and developments in artificial eyes and limbs by following three people who need them. Karen Grisdale is visually impaired and has an operation in which electrodes are placed on the visual cortex in the brain in order that she can see spots of light outlining objects. Erik Ax has an amputated leg and is fitted with a prosthetic leg using bone integration surgery, in which a titanium fixture is placed into the thigh bone. Helen Smith is a young girl born with one hand who wears an artificial arm that can be controlled by electrical signals from the arm muscles.
