About this work

Description

Alexander Yorke (1847-1911). Youngest son of Admiral Charles Philip Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke (1799-1873), of Wimpole Hall, Cambs. Member of the British Royal Household 1874-1910. "Mr Yorke had a great love of art, music and the drama, and while he was a member of Queen Victoria's household he originated and used to arrange the theatrical entertainments given by members of the household at Osborne at Christmas time. He was himself an extremely good mimic, and could impersonate with great success some of the principal actors and actresses of the day. His interest in the poor manifested itself in the work which he undertook on behalf of friendless men in the East-end of London ..." (obituary in The times 20 March 1911, p. 11)
