    medical evidence was privately submitted to tlie judgment of an experienced medical man who had not been previously con- sulted, and that he confirmed and corroborated the conclusions which had been drawn by the witnesses for the Crown. The general evidence also underwent a close sifting, but with a like result. All pointed to the guilt of the prisoner, and tended to show that he had endeavoured by artifice to fix the charges of attempted murder and suicide on a woman whom he himself had murdered. The prisoner protested his innocence to the last, but so have many other great criminals of whose guilt there could be no reasonable doubt.
