The following is an interim description which may change when detailed cataloguing takes place in future:

The papers largely document Irving's involvement in the development of trauma care in Britain, 1970s-1980s.

Work carried out for the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS):

  • Papers from Irving's time as chair of RCS committee on the management of major trauma, including the committee's major 1988 report and the associated research papers including notes on 1000 deaths due to injury drawn from coroners' records
  • Papers from Irving's time as chair of Inter-Collegiate Committee on intensive therapy services training
  • Papers from Irving's time as chair of the RCS Committee on surgery in the 21st century
  • Ileostomy Association National Council minutes and personal correspondence: The Ileostomy Association of Great Britain and Ireland is a patient support association supporting patients with stoma; Miles was Manchester Division President and later National President (1982-1992)

  • Papers on the establishment of Britain's first intestinal failure service

    Biographical note

    Professor Sir Miles Horsfall Irving, MD, FRCS, FRCSE (b.1935) has held numerous posts including Professor of Surgery, University of Manchester, 1974-1999; Honorary Consultant Surgeon to Hope Hospital, Salford from 1974; head of the University Department of Surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary 1992-1995; and Emeritus Professor at the University of Manchester from 1999. He has throughout his career taken a special interest in the development of trauma care services.
