About this work

Description

10 years after Russia's Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, there is still no clear picture of its effects on the health of those living in Belarus. The interests of the world's atomic energy industry are in conflict with scientists' attempts to assess the situation. The programme examines the International Atomic Energy Agency's report on the incident, which concluded that no diseases could be linked to fall-out - in spite of the rise in cases of thyroid cancer since the explosion. A further complication is that the Chernobyl nuclear accident is the first in which radioactive caesium has been released, and its effects are yet to emerge. In view of the secrecy and inaction which followed the Chernobyl explosion, further endangering the lives of those within range, should the West review its own plans for coping with a nuclear emergency?
