About this work

Description

Testicle (testis) from an adult goat (caprine), viewed from the left side if it were in the body. Visible structures include the epididymis (white, C-shaped curve around the right-hand edge of the testicle; lower part of image) and spermatic cord. The epididymis is a highly coiled tube which carries sperm out of the testicle where they are made and stores sperm as they mature. The veins (filled with blue plastic) and arteries (filled with red plastic) are clearly visible, revealing the network of small blood vessels (pampiniform plexus) found within the spermatic cord. This arrangement exists to maintain the testes at a lower temperature than the rest of the body. The testis measures 7 cm from the top of the epididymis to the base.
