    It will not be found that confusion arises from this double use of t, the related words being wholly distinct. In no case should this or any contraction-consonant be intersected through an outline which consists of a single full consonant; the contraction must be then prefixed or affixed. If it were intersected through brain, it would be doubtful whether tumour of the brain or brain tumour was meant. In the same way, and subject to the same limitation :— Hypertrophy (of the) may be indicated by the tick h pr ; Paralysis by the hooked pr ; Reflex by the upward r ; Murmur by the hook mr, affixed. Regurgitation may be indicated by the contraction given under the word, joined to the preceding woz'd. Other points to which attention may be directed are the following:— The termination sis is indicated by a large cirole with- out a vowel, and ses by the same with the vowel within it. Whenever convenient, the words ending in sis, which have a plural form in ses have been written with a small circle s and the downward terminal s, on account of the convenience of thickening the letter to indicate the z sound, which is invariable in the plural and absent in the singular. Acid and soda may be represented with perfect safety by the joined circle s and d, because the word acid invariably follows the letter k, while (of) soda invariably follows a word ending in t and signifying a compound of the acid. N There is a tendency, which is not unnatural but is not wise, to the premature adoption of contractions and phraseo- grams by those who wozdd do bettei’ to be content for a time with the brevity and ease obtainable without special contractions, which diminish legibility. It is proposed, however, to issue subsequently a list of the more useful phraseograms and of some further contractions. For the further improvement of this list, members are deszred to send from time to time to Or. Gray, 19, Beaumont Street, Oxford, a note of any errata which they may detect, and ot any outlines, contractions, and phraseograms, which they have fauly tested in their own wilting, other than or in addition to those here given.
