Description
"To honour the return [to Rome] in early July [1815] of Cardinal Ercole Consalvi, who through brilliant personal diplomacy had won restitution of the papal legations in Vienna, Francesco Manno was commissioned to design a composition for engraving. This engraving, which recalls several features of Manno's Quirinal compositions, represents Consalvi returning to Pius VII the legations of the Church led by Rome, while personifications of Justice, Strength, Mercy and History look on. Consalvi is said through modesty to have wished the engraving suppressed, and it may be because of this that a variant composition, also by Manno, is known, in which the central figure of Consalvi is replaced by the personification of peace, and the Papal keys substituted for the chains held by Rome in the original version" (Hiesinger, op. cit., p. 79). On the left are the allegorical figures representing the Papal legations (Ferrara, Bologna and Romagna, led by the city of Rome). Above is an allegory of justice. On the right are Strength, Mercy and History
