SEM of cochlea which showed hearing loss as a result of bacterial meningitis. Note the presence of bacteria close to hair bundles of outer hair cells. Regular arrangement of stereocilia of some hair bundles is disrupted as a result of bacterial invasion of the cochlea. Magnification X 8000.
