Biographical note

John Henry Walters was born into a medical family in Chudleigh, Devon in 1909.

During the Second World War he saw active service in both Iraq and Egypt, and worked with Far East Prisoners of War after their release. This latter work led to an interest in the neurological consequences of prolonged malnutrition. This interest continued after the war. From 1948-1951, Walters worked with John Waterlow at the Nutrition Research Station in The Gambia, where they researched the effects of malnutrition on the livers of Gambian children. After three years working in Kuwait, he became medical officer in charge of the West African Council for Medical Research, based in Lagos.

In 1958 Walters returned to Britain to become consultant physician to The Hospital for Tropical Diseases, a post he held until his retirement in 1974. After retiring, Walters moved back to Devon, where he served as chief medical officer to the Newton Abbot Steeplechase.
