    longer than three hours, and yet many can bear to fast for days. Its sympathy with the heart and brain is great, for a glass of wine will remove Ipwness and minting almost instantly. Some persons have enormous appetites : the Roman Emperor Maximin ate 2olbs. of meat at a meal; and yet some persons in , good health eat very little. § III. The animalfuncimis, such as see- ing, hearing, smelling, tasting, feeling, and the various motions of the body, which are performed by different organs, as the brain, the nerves, and a very great number of muscles, the chief of which is the hearty by whose power millions of motions are car- ried, on in the body, whether we are awake pr asleep. By means of the brain and nerves, there is a wonderful connexion and correspond- ence between the different organs, especi- ally the stomach, the heart and the brain, which is termed sympathy ; and as this asto- nishing faculty is most discernible when the body is disordered, 1 shall explain it by a few examples taken from its diseased state. Thus, if any food disagrees with the stomach, the head aches, or there is a sense of faintness at the heart; head-ache may produce faintness at the heart, and sick- ness at stomach ; gravel in the kidnpys often produces vomiting : innumerable in- stances might be given.
