Lindau on Lake Constance (Bodensee) was a free city of the Holy Roman Empire. At the top of the print, the eye of God looks down on the double headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire. The eagle holds a banderolle with the motto "Sub umbra alarum tuarum" (under the shadow of your wings, i.e. under the protection of the Emperor). Below the eagle are allegorical figures representing prosperity from the land (grapes) and from the waters (various kinds of fish swimming in the rivers Leiblach, Argen, and Rhine). Below the allegories are the coats of arms of 23 councillors of the city for the year 1768: they are cut to ovals and pasted on to blank cartouches. The mayor is Johann Michael Seutter von Loetzen (a vintner), the town clerk is Johann Christoph Stoll, and the city physician is Georg Ulrich Miller (1663-1722). Below the coats of arms is a letterpress calendar for the year 1768. At the foot is a bird's eye view of the fortified island of Lindau, linked to the German mainland by a bridge and a drawbridge
