About this work

Description

The end of the rope in the écorché's raised right hand is looped, suggesting a noose such as one seen in the second print of the series held by another écorché seen from the back. The noose is a reference to the most common supply of subjects for dissection, executed criminals. This imagery had also been used for one of the muscle plates of Berengario da Carpi's Commentaria of Bologna 1521 (fol. 519r) It was reused in the same author's Isagogae breves, which went through several editions after its first publication in Bologna in 1522
