About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced April 2024 : A palm (Desmoncus species): liane with fruit. Watercolour after C. Goodall, 1846.

Description

A species of Desmoncus. The palm is shown with a slightly flexuous stem bearing leaves along most of its length, an infructescence with a spiny peduncular bract, and leaves with cirri. The cirrus is the extension of the tip of the leafy rachis bearing grappling-modified leaflets and sometimes prickles. The long straight prickles on the rachises and the absence of prickles on the cirri are characteristics of D. horridus ssp. horridus (A. Henderson, 'A revision of Desmoncus (Arecaceae)', Phytotaxa, 2011, 35: 1-88)
