About this work

Description

Three of Britain's most eminent living women scientists look back over their lives and careers. They are:- Dr. Alice Stewart (University of Birmingham) whose discovery that x-rays can cause cancer set her at loggerheads with the nuclear industry; Dame Mary Cartwright, mathematician, (former Principal of Girton College, Cambridge) whose work on the mathematics of radar signals led her into the field of chaos theory; and Dr. Helen Muir (former Wellcome Trustee) whose work on joints and ligaments led to advances in the understanding of osteoarthritis and made the Kennedy Institute, London, a first-rate-osteoarthritis research institution. They describe their experiences as women scientists embarking on careers in the first quarter of the century, discuss how their committment to science affected their private lives and reflect on their achievements.
