Trauma medicine. Trauma at war. Part 2 of 2.

Second part of a radio documentary about emergency medicine and the importance of modern trauma medical practice. Dr Kevin Fong travels to Camp Bastion in Afghanistan where British Forces were based. First, Fong is embedded with the British Defence Medical Services during training exercises at Brize Norton. The emergency team there have experienced the most extreme casualties. Dr Kate Prior is an anaesthetist first based in Helmand and has been in Afghanistan since 2009; she explains how effective their simulation exercises have been. Her first experience was with a badly injured man. She operates from a Chinook helicopter which comprises the Medical Emergency Response Teams 'MERT'. Fong travels out to Afghanistan. All units have medical packs; combat medical technicians are trained to handle the immediate effects of a medical emergency. All links in the chain of trauma medicine has been used to improve domestic survival rates.
