Description

In the centre, Flora, seated with a basket of flowers, is accompanied by a winged youth seated on a cloud, representing Zephyr. Left, two nymphs bring baskets full of flowers to Flora. Right, Castor and Pollux, representing Gemini, are seated on a bull representing Taurus. In the foreground, (left) two boys playing with armour, representing the return of military campaigns in spring; centre, two swans; right, three boys dancing. In the background, left, a herm of Pan or Faunus at the gate to a garden; centre, a fountain in which a naiad blows a conch; right, a temple with two sculptures of the sphinx

Lettering

Le printems. ... Inventé par F. Verdier. Gravé par I. Haussard. Lettering continues: Flore déesse des fleurs, accompagnée de Zephyr, fait icy le principal ornement de cet agréable saison. Les nymphes de sa suite, et divers amours, s'empressent à lui venir présenter des guirlandes et des corbeilles remplies de fleurs différentes. Castor et Pollux marquent les signes du zodiaque que le soleil parcourt dans cette saison, dont le renouvellement et la gayeté est exprimée par des cygnes, et plusieurs enfans qui dansent, et d'autres qui se jouënt avec des armes, pour figurer le retour des campagnes de Mars.
