Funding for science research.

The programme examines the change in scientific research culture, from the time when most research was publicly funded in universities and information was freely discussed and disseminated, to the more secretive situation where research is increasingly funded by industry. Prof Milstein argues for freedom of research. Prof. Walter Bodmer dislikes the growing secrecy and argues for the advantages of patents. Research can be very profitable personally for academics. There is discussion about the difference between 'basic' research and commercially directed research, particularly in the field of genetics.
