About this work
Description
In the light of fears about a pandemic of avian flu strain H5N1, this programme traces the first signs of the flu in Asia and includes accounts of its potential impact from virologists who've been tracking its progress since 1997, members of the World Health Organisation and people affected. Computer graphic illustrations show how this particular virus might mutate into a modern plague virus. John Oxford talks about the 1918 influenza epidemic which killed 250 000 people in the UK alone, and around 40 million people worldwide. The programme also includes a dramatic reconstruction of a family living through a major flu pandemic.
