About this work

Description

Lord Cochrane is on the left, Beranger on the right, with huge black moustaches indicating Prussian nationality. In the background Napoleon has been tossed in the air by a bull with a man's face, representing John Bull

On 21 February 1814 Captain de Beranger, using a pseudonym, announced that Napoleon had been killed in battle. The value of stocks rose, and a consortium including Lord Cochrane sold at great profit. Cochrane swore an affidavit that he had been deceived by Beranger
