About this work
Description
Album containing 173 pen and ink and pencil sketches, and watercolours, of places and landscapes in the British Isles and on the Continent, by Joseph Jackson Lister. With an accompanying list of the contents, entitled 'J.J.Lister (senior)'s Sketches Vol. 2', probably dating from the early 20th century. Items of Lister family interest include a pencil sketch of 'our Mary' [Mary Lister, 1820-1894, elder sister of Joseph Lister and wife of Rickman Godlee] as a baby, 1820 (no. 49a), and a pen and wash sketch of the east front of Upton House, Essex, the Listers family home, made in 1826 (n. 65).

Biographical note
This album was clearly used by J. J. Lister to house his loose sketches. Works made before 1815 were presumably included in 'Vol.1', the fate of which is unknown.
Related material
J. J. Lister's journal of his continental tour in June to September 1817, illustrated by sketches, is held at Wellcome MS.6962. Most of the continental sketches in the present album derive from the same tour.
