Biographical note
Mourant was the founder and first Director of the Medical Research Council Laboratory established in 1946 (see A.138). It was based at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, London. In 1952 it was designed as the World Health Organisation International Blood Group Reference Laboratory but continued to act as the national laboratory. Mourant retired from the Directorship in 1965 when he moved to the newly established Medical Research Council Serological Population Genetics Laboratory (see section D)
