About this work

Description

In 1953 a project was initiated by Great Ormond Street Hospital to help found a Department of Paediatrics at Makerere University College to be housed alongside the other clinical departments at Mulago Hospital in Kampala. A senior Registrar and two ward sisters went out to assist them with the 'Kampala Scheme' as it was called. Expenses were paid by the hospital and the Ministry of Overseas Development contributed salaries. Dr Philip Evans was involved in the planning work with Sir Wilfrid Sheldon and he visited the country in 1953, 1964 and early in 1971. Dr Bonham Carter visited the hospital in 1970 and recommended that the links between Great Ormond Street and Mulago Hospital be severed, whereas Dr Evans subsequently advised the establishment of a new Acute Treatment Unit. In the event no plans or changes were implemented since Idi Amin came to power in Uganda soon afterwards and the whole scheme foundered.
