Biographical note
John Cairns (b. 1900), after serving in the Rifle Brigade 1918-1922, enlisted in the RAMC in 1926, serving as a nursing orderly at home and in India. He transferred to the Reserve in 1933 with the rank of Corporal. In 1938 he rejoined, initially in an acting capacity, with the rank of Sergeant, and during the War served in France, Egypt, Belgium and Germany as well as in the UK.
