PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by John Rehse at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with his Petition, on the 20th July 1869. I, John Rehse, of Memphis, Tennessee, United States of America, 5 but now residing at Rupert Street, in the County of Middlesex, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention for “ An Improved System for the Cure of Stammering,’’ to be as follows:— This Invention relates to an improved method or system for the cure of stammering, and consists of apparatus to be used by the patient while 10 under instruction. As the nerves of a stammering person do not act upon his lungs while speaking, or at all events only in a slight degree, it becomes necessary to compel the nerves to assist the stammering patient while speaking, for a short time, say from five hours to eight days, after which period the nerves will no longer require aid, and the X5 patient will be cured. One means of causing this assistance of the nerves is to cause the patient to grasp some object with both hands ; the most suitable object being a bar of wood, metal, or other substance supported horizontally on standards, and capable of being raised or lowered to suit the height of the patient, or the bars may be separate 20 and set vertically in the standards, one on each side of the patient.
