Biographical note
Project Summary:Primitive Streak (PS) received a Sci/Art grant in 1997. A collaboration between Helen Storey (artist and former fashion designer) and her sister Kate Storey (biologist), it elucidates the first 1000 hours of human life, through a 27 piece fashion/textile collection. Widely acclaimed as a "cultural hybrid", public demand to see PS continues unabated. Helen Storey Foundation (HSF) project manages PS's touring, (seen to date in 7 countries/3 million people). HSF and its project partners feels strongly that PS needs continued public accessibility and through this grant will introduce new elements both scientifically and culturally pertinent. HSF's new 3 part work, Breath, has venue partners in London and Sheffield. PS will form the first part of Breath. The proposal is to extend the original PS collection, creating 3 new textile/fashion exhibits chronicling/visualising biological lung development. Helen and Kate will conceive/produce these 3 new pieces ensuring scientific accuracy, using new technologically advanced materials that extend Helen's professional practice. For audience understanding, bespoke interpretational materials will be created, new documentation produced, (film, photography, website. There is an allocation for this in the budget under Other). The new exhibits will be shown with 9 from the original collection, touring to London, Sheffield and Newcastle in 2010/11. Educational impact, outreach and evaluation programmes are key.
