    pin ; lastly, cut off three ends, and bring out the remaining one by the side of the pin. Two loops may seem unnecessary, but it is not so ; for, when only one is used, it takes such firm hold of the tissue about the vessel that, during its removal, the safety of the clot is endangered. To withdraw : First remove the pin by a gentle twisting motion ; after which, the knot being libe¬ rated, the ligature can be readily pulled out. I may here observe that the ligatures depicted in both sketches are rather more “ ropelike” than I intended ; and in the second they appear to be less tightly drawn than would be desirable when in actual opera¬ tion. Completed. The advantages of this method are : 1, relia¬ bility ; and, 2, the slight disturbance caused to the vessel and other parts during its removal. The only drawback to its use is the possibility of irritation being excited by the ligature p' but as its sojourn in a wound would be of so short duration, and as silken threads do not produce irritation during the first fifty or sixty hours of their use, such an objection could hardly be sustained. I would * I have instituted various experiments, with a view to the dis¬ covery of some means by which ligatures might be rendered liquid- proof, but as yet I have been unsuccessful. A substance, has, however, lately come under my notice, which will, I believe, answer the purpose.
