The file includes (as A2057/1) a letter to Hodgkin from Joseph Jenkins Roberts (1809-1876), first president of Liberia, in which Roberts sends Hodgkin an early 19th-century Islamic talismanic scroll created by the Mandingo people of the sub-Saharan interior. (Please note that the scroll is stored separately in an oversize folder, O/S 11: see catalogue record for PP/HO/D/A2057/2.)
