Biographical note
Initally an informal Corresponding Club, the Association's educational activities developed into an extensive global programme of International Scientific Meetings (ISM) held every three years, and more frequent Regional and European seminars, meetings and workshops.
The first ISM was held in 1957, and the Regional programme was initiated at the 5th ISM in 1968, following the IEA Council consideration that the ISMs were too infrequent and costly for many members to attend, especially from developing countries. Regional meetings would be held in regions containing a group of countries; the first of these, an African Regional meeting, was held in 1970 in Nigeria, successfully stimulating both interest in and membership of the Association. Following another successful Regional meeting held in Sydney, Australia in 1973, the IEA Council developed a more formal programme for organising Regional meetings and seminars in collaboration with the different World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Offices on a regular basis.
