About this work
Description
Set up partly in response to the Report of the Royal Commission on the Law Relating to Mental Illness and Mental Deficiency (1957), which recommended closer co-operation between psychiatrists and public health doctors in community care of patients. In 1959 the Committee submitted an Interim Report to their respective councils containing recommendations on collaboration. After this the Committee ceased to meet for a time, in order to gain some experience of the working of the Mental Health Act 1959 before reconsidering common problems. In Nov 1961 it was revived and a Joint Report on co-operation in mental health was produced in 1965. The following year a joint working party went on to consider the evaluation of methods of special educational treatment of maladjusted children. This working party resulted from the Society's comments on the RMPA Child Psychiatry Section's 'Report on schools and hostels for maladjusted children' Jul 1965. The working party produced its conclusions in Jan 1967.
The Society's representatives belonged to the Mental Health Group and included Dr H M Cohen, a member up to 1967. The Secretary's file contains signed minutes (up to Jul 1959). Unsigned duplicates of minutes have been weeded from Dr Cohen's file. Where there are two versions of minutes it is presumed either that one copy was the RMPA's or they represent longer and shorter versions. D.2/7/1 and 2 should be consulted together.
