About this work

Description

Bowlby founded a research team at the Tavistock Clinic in 1948. Members of the team included Mary Ainsworth, James Robertson, Christoph Heinicke, Rudolph Schaffer, Mary Boston, Dina Rosenbluth, Colin Murray Parkes, and Tony Ambrose. They studied children who had experienced separation from their parents in different settings such as a tuberculosis sanatorium, a fever hospital, and a residential nursery. Colin Parkes, who joined the Unit in 1962, also visited widows in their homes to chart the course of normal grief in adults. The findings of the major projects were never published. This section includes material for a projected book based on the research and a series of Tavistock clinic papers by Bowlby some of which were later re-worked into published papers.
