About this work

Description

The Postnatal Committee (often abbreviated to PNC, or also known as the Postnatal Exercise and Discussion, PNEX&D) was established to provide support and advice to parents after the birth of their child, offering postnatal classes and support and information for new parents. The Postnatal Support System allowed new parents to connect to other parents with young children in the local area. The Committee also provided special support to people with specific needs, such as working mothers, parents with disabilities, those who had lost a baby, and those with other difficulties following birth. Postnatal Coordinators and Supporters were not formally trained (unlike antenatal teachers) but instead were taught necessary skills in regional workshops and study days. The Postnatal Committee had a representative in each region to provide localised support and help to new mothers.
