Photograph of a print publication illustration showing the method of use of the opthalmoscope, invented by Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894), German physicist and physician. The diagram shows the examiner reflecting a beam of light through the patient's dialated pupil, focusing the beam on the back of the eye by using a lens in his left hand.
